Bassist Nikolai Fraiture and vocalist Julian Casablancas (son of businessman John Casablancas) are friends since childhood. Guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fabrizio Moretti started playing together when they both studied at Dwight School in Manhattan. Later, Casablancas was sent to Le Rosey Institute, a traditional school in Switzerland, aiming to improve his behavior, he had developed an alcohol problem. There he met Albert Hammond Jr., both Americans, despite not being very good friends. Years later, Casablancas met with unintentionally Hammond Jr. on the streets of New York.
The Modern Age (1998-2001)
The Modern Age (EP) was released in 2001 and led to a war of interests between record for most rock and roll band in years. Later, they were well-publicized, causing a split among the followers of rock and independent magazines: trying to find out if they really were the saviors of rock or a bunch of rich kids with cool names and copy of the Velvet Underground. Both bands were very similar for both Casablancas vocal style, similar to Lou Reed, and by alternating between Hammond and Nick Valensi as lead guitarist, which recalls Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison.
Is This It (2001-2002)
Band's first album, Is This It is one of the references of the garage rock of the early 2000s. The track "New York City Cops" was not part of the album released in the U.S. on account of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Later, Slash (Guns N 'Roses) played the song with the band. The relationship continued with Guns in the music video of "Someday," which quickly shows Duff, Slash and Matt. The video begins with Duff talking with vocalist Casablancas and the Strokes all sitting at a bar table chatting with Slash. For the music video for "Last Nite", the Strokes made a unique presentation without touching dubbing and apparently live in a game show-style 1960s. Although eventually be released videos, the band signed with RCA precisely because it was the only label that respected the decision of the banda do a music video. Despite not mind playing live in front of television cameras, they were opposed to record a video. In November 2009, "Is This It" was voted the best album of the 2000s according to NME.
Room on Fire (2002-2005)
The Strokes released their second album Room on Fire in October 2003. Received praise but was less successful, even though gold in the United States, commercially speaking. The album's sound has influences from bands like The Cars, The Ramones and Blondie.
First Impressions Of Earth and extensive arrest (2006-2009)
Their third album, First Impressions of Earth, was released in January 2006. In Japan, went gold in its first week of release. It was also the most downloaded album for two weeks on iTunes. Fraiture claimed that the album was "like a scientific breakthrough." In January 2006, the band then made their second appearance on Saturday Night Live, performing "Juicebox" and "You Only Live Once."
Angles (2009-2011)
In January 2009, frontman Julian Casablancas and guitarist Nick Valensi started writing material for the band's 4th album, the intention was to begin shooting in February. Julian commented in Rolling Stone that they had completed about three songs and they sound like a mix between '70s rock and "music of the future." On March 31, the band stated on their MySpace: "After a long and necessary hibernation period that saw many other musical projects emerge, we are pleased to announce that The Strokes returned to full speed in your area in New York , writing and rehearsing new material for a new 4th album. " The album was officially released on March 22, 2011, despite several songs could be found on the internet before that date. The launch divided fans of the band, as many testified that the songs did not look like the other cds banda. But it was a critical success.
The first single from the new album, Under Cover of Darkness was released on February 9, 2011.
New album (2011-present)
In mid-March 2011, in an interview with Shortlist Magazine, revealed that Strokes had already begun working on their fifth studio album. However, the sessions were postponed due to the mixing process of Angles. Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi confirmed that no new material, as well as plenty of leftover material.
On April 25, bassist Nikolai Fraiture posted a tweet announcing that the band was going to the studio to work on some new ideas.
In an interview with Fuse TV, guitarist Albert Hammond Jr stated that the band was working on the fifth studio album in Los Angeles.
The members revealed that they are planning to record a new album as soon as possible.

Sound style and influence
The sound made by the band are different from each disc. While on Is This It shows the band sound more muffled, with dashes of garage rock, extremely melodic. On the second album Room on Fire shows the band sound more accelerated in some songs, melodies keeping constant. First Impressions of Earth in the band begins to experiment with other styles of rock, differentiating totally lo-fi ideas of the previous albums, adhering to Indie, in a way that the album does not have a constant musical style on all bands. Already in Angles, there are small traces of new age music along with Indie, making the album also has no defined style, being a sum of opposites, the new age, which is an ancient musical style, with Indie, which now turn is very recent.
The band has such great influence bands like Velvet Underground, Television, Buzzcocks, Pearl Jam, The Beatles and especially Ramones. The way of singing is very Julian compared to Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground. Many bands were influenced by the sound of the band's first two albums. Examples include Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks ethe Cribs.
Were praised by Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Brandon Flowers (The Killers). This is considered a hardcore fan of the Strokes: some of the famous songs from The Killers, Brandon uses the same effect as the voice of Julian Casablancas. When The Killers started through newspaper advertisements made by guitarist Dave Keuning, cited the Strokes as clear influence.
Unlike many bands, but following the tradition of Television, both guitarists of the Strokes play both solo and rhythm guitar. For example, the soil of "Way You Talk Too Much" is played by Nick Valensi, whereas in those last nite sole is Albert. In some songs like "Reptilia" Albert runs the riff while Nick Valensi sole. Although touch different guitars (Epiphone Riviera Nick uses a signed by him and Albert uses a Fender Stratocaster) the configuration of the guitars is similar, using the same amp models and distortion pedal.
